1. Remove solids and blot liquids
Lift any solid material with an appropriate utensil. Use a clean, absorbent white cloth or paper towel to blot liquid by applying pressure. Do not rub. Begin at the outer edge and work towards the centre so the spill does not spread.
2. Identify the correct treatment
Different stains require different treatment sequences. Check the Providence stain table before applying detergent, diluted bleach, vinegar solution or alcohol. Never assume a cleaner is suitable simply because it is marketed for carpet.
3. Test an inconspicuous area
Before treating the visible mark, test the proposed method in a cupboard or another hidden area. Stop if you see a colour or texture change. Apply only the amount directed and continue blotting rather than scrubbing.
4. Rinse, blot and let the area dry
Rinse as directed using clean tap water and a clean cloth or sponge. Blot up the remaining moisture, then keep people and pets off the area until it is dry. If the stain does not respond, contact a professional carpet cleaner rather than escalating with stronger household chemicals.
